Malaysia and Australia eye domestic neodymium magnet production in rare earth push

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 12 — Malaysia and Australia are exploring enhanced collaboration in the rare earth elements (REE) and critical minerals sectors, with a particular focus on the creation of domestic neodymium magnet manufacturing. During a recent discussion between Malaysia's Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup and Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia Danielle Heinecke, the two nations agreed that this matter was a key area of interest.

The Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry (NRES) highlighted that Malaysia is keen on leveraging Australia's technical expertise and leadership in the critical minerals sector. The two countries aim to develop a comprehensive domestic REE value chain, encompassing midstream and downstream processes, aligned with the National Mineral Policy 3 (NMP3).

Moreover, the meeting focused on the sharing of best practices in managing rare earth processing residues, specifically neutralisation underflow residue (NUF), and the efforts to establish local neodymium magnet manufacturing capabilities. Beyond critical minerals, the dialogue also covered hazardous waste management, marine ecosystem conservation, climate financing, and Malaysia's commitment to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31).

The combination of both nations' strengths is anticipated to drive green economic growth and bring long-term benefits to both countries. This meeting also aimed to bolster bilateral relations and explore new avenues of cooperation under the Malaysia-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), which was established in 2021.
