Landslide in Mumbai kills 6 as India is drenched by monsoon rains

A landslide in Mumbai, India, claimed the lives of six individuals and injured four others on Wednesday morning, August 12, 2026. The disaster struck early, when a hillside collapsed onto multiple homes in the densely populated Ghatkopar suburb. Tanaji Kambli, a civic official, reported that the incident occurred before dawn. Rescue efforts, involving firefighters, police, the National Disaster Response Force, and civic officials, were hampered by narrow access lanes that prevented the use of heavy machinery.

Despite these challenges, rescue teams managed to extricate at least 10 people from the debris and transport them to a government hospital. Six victims, comprising two children and two teenagers, succumbed to their injuries upon arrival at the medical facility. Four others were hospitalized and are receiving treatment. Mumbai's mayor, Ritu Tawde, visited the affected area and pledged financial assistance to the victims' families.

The Indian weather department has warned of more intense monsoon conditions across western India. Authorities have advised residents in flood- and landslide-prone regions to stay vigilant. Mumbai, home to over 20 million people, typically experiences its heaviest rainfall between June and September. Frequent torrential downpours often lead to blocked roads, railway disruptions, air and rail service interruptions, and landslides.

These incidents frequently result from building on unstable slopes and inadequate drainage systems. Experts have long cautioned that rapid urbanization, along with construction on fragile hillsides and poor drainage, has left Mumbai increasingly susceptible to deadly monsoon-related disasters. Climate change further exacerbates the situation by delivering heavier and more erratic rainfall.
