Kipruto Arap Kirwa: The spirit of Raila is with Sifuna, not Oburu

Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Kipruto Arap Kirwa has stated that the political spirit of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has transferred to Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna after Odinga's death, rather than to Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga. Speaking on Herman Manyora's podcast, the United Opposition chairman made the claim, arguing that it's impossible for two people to inherit Odinga's spirit.

Kirwa criticized ODM leadership under Oburu, noting that despite resembling his late father Jaramogi Odinga, Oburu has not inherited any of the political traits that made Jaramogi a prominent figure in Kenya's political history. He suggested that Oburu merely pretended to support Raila while lacking the full commitment necessary to carry forward the late leader's influence.

Kirwa also pointed out that Raila was the one who, after his father's death, took over politically and continued Jaramogi's political legacy. The comments come in the wake of similar criticism from Siaya Governor James Orengo, who argued that Oburu had traditionally operated behind the scenes rather than taking an active role in major political discussions and decisions. Orengo pointed to an upcoming book by Oburu titled In the Shadows of My Father as further evidence of his claim.

These remarks from Kirwa and Orengo are expected to fuel the ongoing debate over who should lead the political legacy of Raila Odinga as the ODM navigates a leadership transition and prepares for the 2027 general election.
