John Brittas moves privilege notice against BJP MP over her remarks

In a recent development, CPI(M) MP John Brittas has filed a notice of breach of privilege against BJP MP Sushmita Dev. This action took place after Dev made remarks about Brittas during a House proceeding on Monday, according to sources. Brittas expressed his objection to the use of a particular word, which he believed was intended to disparage individuals from South India.

Brittas is part of a group of legislators from Kerala who approached the Rajya Sabha Chairman, C P Radhakrishnan, to lodge their protest. On Monday, Brittas was moving a statutory resolution against the Income Tax (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026 when the BJP MP allegedly repeated the derogatory word in his address. Brittas emphasized that the use of such words, specifically directed towards people from South India in Mumbai during the 1960s and 70s, reduced their identity to stereotypes.

When reached for comment, Dev stated that she plans to file a similar notice of breach of privilege against Brittas. According to Dev, Brittas had also made a remark against her during the proceedings.
