Jeff Dean’s final 48 hours at Google

Jeff Dean, a 27-year veteran of Google, concluded his time at the tech giant in a series of emotional and memorable moments. On his final day, Dean held an emotional goodbye session with around 139 colleagues via video call, expressing heartfelt sentiments filled with "explosions of heart" and sad face emojis. He formally announced his departure to leave and launch Discovery Loop, an AI startup aimed at accelerating scientific discovery.

Surprisingly, around 1,500 Google employees showed up to Dean's farewell gathering, more than quadruple the original planned audience of 300. The massive turnout reflected the deep professional connections Dean had made throughout his 27-year career at Google, particularly within the engineering and AI teams.

To personalize his last day, Dean participated in yoga and soccer later that evening, then checked his account to find approximately 400 messages from colleagues. He responded to these messages tirelessly, staying up until around 2:30 a.m. to address them all. New messages continued to arrive throughout his final morning, with Dean responding to another 500 messages from personal email. By 5:20 p.m., Dean had addressed the majority of incoming messages, but the flow of communications did not cease.

At 11:59:59 p.m. on his final day, Jeff Dean officially became "Unemployed" for a mere minute before becoming the co-founder of Discovery Loop. Dean's departure marked the end of an era at Google, but his legacy of leadership and innovation will continue to influence the company's future AI endeavors.
