IYD: Government urged to empower youths, persons with disabilities

The Ogun State government and other stakeholders have urged enhanced support for youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, and programs for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) at the 2026 International Youth Day, themed "Different Contexts, Common Aspiration." The sub-theme emphasized empowering youths, women, and persons with disabilities through entrepreneurship, innovation, and inclusive economic opportunities.

The International Youth Day, observed annually on August 12, highlights issues affecting young people, promotes development, and positions them as change agents. During the event in Abeokuta, Dr Odumusi Emmanuel, CEO of Edfrica, stressed the need for stronger collaboration among government, private organizations, and development partners to create opportunities for young people and persons with disabilities.

He emphasized that their inclusion is crucial for a complete world, noting that while policies and funding exist, their impact is often limited by poor implementation and inadequate support. Emmanuel also encouraged young people to remain focused despite economic challenges, urging them to invest in themselves and their futures, understanding that success might require sacrifice but that perseverance and hard work would ultimately yield results.

Temitope Ajao, speaking on behalf of participants, and Grace Animasaun appreciated the organizers and appealed for the state government to prioritize persons with disabilities by integrating them into government programs, policies, and development initiatives. They stressed the importance of proper implementation of disability laws and policies to enhance welfare and protect the rights of PWDs, especially women, ensuring they have more opportunities to contribute to their communities and improve their lives.
