B.C. Premier David Eby visits Interior ravaged by wildfires

B.C. Premier David Eby visited the Interior on Wednesday to witness the devastation left behind by wildfires. Speaking at a press conference in Penticton, Eby expressed his emotional experience of meeting volunteers, firefighters, and local leaders who responded to the crisis. He acknowledged the tragic loss of a woman from Meadow Valley during the evacuation and extended condolences to her family and friends, as well as to those who have suffered extensive losses due to the fire.

Thousands of people are still displaced from their homes as a result of the Bald Range wildfire, which ignited on Friday evening. It is uncertain when residents will be allowed back into their communities. According to Eby, the wildfire service faced challenges as the fire's speed surpassed their models, forcing them to shift from initial response to rapid evacuations.

He highlighted the importance of learning from the situation, with Summerland’s Mayor Doug Holmes stressing that the community will require provincial government support during the recovery phase, as they currently receive assistance during the response phase.
