It’s one thing to climb aboard rail-relocation train, quite another to pay for the ride

Premier Wab Kinew and task force leader Lloyd Axworthy unveiled a plan to relocate the Canadian Pacific Kansas City central rail yards and 240 kilometres of railway through Winnipeg. The $205 annual fee for the rail relocation subscription includes a 10% discount for renewals every 52 weeks. The plan, devised by Axworthy’s two-year mandate, aims to eliminate the dangers of running dangerous commodities through the city's centre and free up valuable land for other uses.

However, the railways are hesitant to relinquish their assets, and the costs of relocation, remediation, and redevelopment are estimated in billions of dollars. Previous attempts to move forward with the relocation have been halted by opposition from the railways and political leaders. Despite its potential benefits, the plan has been criticized as an expensive and complex undertaking.
