India builds a new train for Bangladesh

India has delivered the first batch of 19 customized coaches to Bangladesh Railway, further solidifying the railway collaboration between the two nations. The Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala constructed these specialized LHB broad gauge passenger coaches, tailored to meet Bangladesh Railway's operational needs and passenger preferences.

Each of the 19 coaches comprises a mix of AC Sleeper Cars, AC Chair Cars, Non-AC Chair Cars, and Power Cars. Notably, this inaugural batch includes three AC Sleeper Cars, three AC Chair Cars, eleven Non-AC Chair Cars, and two Power Cars.

The custom-made coaches boast unique design elements aimed at enhancing passenger comfort. These include reclining chairs with stainless steel armrests and footrests, offering multiple reclining positions. Additionally, the AC coaches are equipped with fans, while other passenger amenities such as CCTV surveillance and an alarm system contribute to an improved travel experience.

Recognizing specific passenger requirements, the coaches are equipped with features like partially openable windows, a Baby Care Room, and a Prayer Room. These additions have been included as part of the modifications made exclusively for Bangladesh Railway.

The coaches also feature a strengthened roof structure, designed to accommodate additional weight from passengers traveling on the roof during peak traffic periods. This modification, as per the Ministry of Railways, has been implemented to ensure the coaches can withstand such conditions.

A key technological highlight of these coaches is their crashworthy design, adhering to European Standard EN 15227. This redesign incorporates provisions for better collision performance and passenger safety. Moreover, the electrical system of these coaches is tailored to Bangladesh Railway's requirements, operating on a 415 V electrical system, unlike the conventional 750 V system used in Indian Railways.

The collaboration between the Rail Coach Factory and Bangladesh Railway began in 2015-16, with the successful supply of 120 LHB broad gauge passenger coaches. A significant order of 200 coaches in seven variants was placed by Bangladesh Railway in 2024. The latest delivery of 19 custom-made coaches represents the continuation of this strong partnership between the two railway systems.
