Immigration dept caps Malaysian passport validity at 10 years after overseas travel issues, offers free replacement

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 — The Malaysian Immigration Department has introduced a new rule setting the maximum validity period of the Malaysian International Passport (PMA) at 10 years, as of the date of this ruling. This change was triggered by reported challenges that some passport holders encountered while traveling abroad with passports that had validity exceeding the 10-year limit.

The authority's intention behind this decision is to standardize the handling of PMA requirements and eliminate any potential confusion that could arise during international travel.

To facilitate this adjustment, the department plans to notify airlines to provide support to Malaysian travelers overseas who might be affected by this new regulation. Furthermore, the Immigration Department has decided to cease issuing passports with validity periods surpassing 10 years until the issue is satisfactorily resolved with the pertinent parties.

Current passport holders with validity exceeding the 10-year threshold will be provided with free replacement passports, which will also have a maximum validity of 10 years. Affected passport holders will be given priority for this replacement process. The Immigration Department stresses its ongoing commitment to refining the PMA requirements to streamline the process for Malaysians and ensure a more seamless international travel experience.
