How much time does AI save at work? New Census Bureau data breaks it down.

A new Census Bureau data report examines how artificial intelligence affects time efficiency in the workplace. According to the findings, around 55% of workers incorporate AI into their job responsibilities. Among these AI users, roughly one-third claim that AI reduces the time needed to finish their assignments by one to two hours.

Workers utilize AI for a diverse range of tasks, with the most common uses being information search or technical assistance (37%), writing or drafting text (32%), generating ideas (32%), interpreting, translating or summarizing information (31%), handling administrative tasks (27%), conducting data analysis or visualization (21%), offering tutoring or training (16%), and providing customer support (12%).

A smaller proportion of workers employ AI for tasks such as writing code (12%), managing medical care (8%), and overseeing logistics or supply chains (8%).

The time saved varies significantly among AI users. One-quarter of respondents reported that AI cut their task completion time by less than an hour. Over 30% said AI saved them between one and two hours, while 15% experienced even greater efficiency gains of three hours or more. However, it's essential to note that learning to use new technologies can initially extend the time required to complete tasks, a phenomenon explained by the J-curve model of productivity.

This model, developed by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, describes the initial dip in productivity due to the resources dedicated to learning and adapting to new technologies, followed by exponential long-term gains.
