Fire at Sherwood Park home the latest in string of incidents at problem property

A fire at a home in Sherwood Park's Glen Allen neighbourhood this past weekend marked the latest in a series of incidents at the property. On Sunday around 2 a.m., flames could be seen leaping out the front window at 58 Glengarry Crescent. The fire was eventually extinguished, and accelerant detection dogs were deployed to the scene.

Strathcona County is now investigating the blaze, with both the fire department and RCMP involved. The house on Glengarry Crescent has been under scrutiny for nearly a year, with neighbours describing being "terrorized" by its tenants. In November 2025, Alberta Health Services declared the home unfit for human habitation. Residents have long complained about the property, with law enforcement reportedly visiting the residence several times a week, sometimes two or three times a day.

Neighbors reported multiple instances of property damage to their dogs, with some even being attacked. The Delplaques, who have lived next door, expressed frustration with the landlord's apparent indifference to the deteriorating condition of the house, which they described as a "slum." The recent tenants, who allegedly stayed in up to 10 people, were reportedly loud and abusive.

Alberta Health Services had previously ordered the residents to vacate the premises, but as of December 12, 2025, no action had been taken. The Delplaques claimed that the property remains condemned and that tenants should have been evicted by then. Strathcona County Mayor Rod Frank acknowledged residents' frustration, stating that while they are not legally obligated to act quickly, they are committed to finding a solution.

On Sunday, the fire has reignited calls for the house to be demolished, ending the residents' long-standing grievances with the property.
