FIFA needs an overhaul not a leadership debate, FIFPRO Europe chief says

FIFPRO Europe chief David Terrier has called for significant governance reforms within FIFA, stating that the world soccer governing body is experiencing a crisis of confidence. Terrier criticized the concentration of power within FIFA, highlighting the breakdown of trust between federations and confederations following FIFA president Gianni Infantino's controversial proposal to sell off commercial rights to the World Cup.

Infantino, who is seeking re-election in March, has faced open revolt from UEFA, AFC, and CONCACAF after they denounced his conduct and demanded his resignation. Terrier emphasized that the issue is not whether Infantino should resign or stay, but rather that a real war has erupted due to a loss of trust from many federations and confederations.

He argued that FIFA needs reforms to address the lack of trust and the questionable operation of the system. Following a crisis meeting in Morocco, FIFA apologized for the handling of the proposal and reaffirmed its support for Infantino, warning against efforts to undermine him. However, Terrier warned that FIFA risks repeating past mistakes, as the current system is no longer acceptable and could lead to further suspicion and a negative impact on football.

Terrier urged FIFA to share power and make the president a guarantor, stating that it is the last opportunity to change the system before it may be too late.
