Ex-Marine Robert Gilman tried to get out of a Russian prison by volunteering for the invasion of Ukraine. He got out on humanitarian grounds instead — so what does Putin want in return?

On August 12, 2025, the United States saw the release of Robert Gilman, a 32-year-old former Marine, who had been sentenced to 10 years in a Russian penal colony. Gilman was initially detained in Voronezh in January 2022 after he was accused of assaulting a police officer during a drunken disturbance. The court increased his sentence after finding he had attacked guards and an investigator within the prison system.

However, Robert claimed his troubles began with a poisoned vodka incident and that he was subjected to abuse and mistreatment while in custody.

Despite the claims of mistreatment, the U.S. government did not intervene to secure his release. Gilman expressed his desire to serve in the war against Ukraine, which he said was prompted by encouragement from his cellmates. In court, he informed the judge that his father had served in Russia and that he himself wished to honor their legacy by fighting. Despite his pleas, Robert was released on humanitarian grounds, prompting speculation from U.S. officials and media about what Russia may have been seeking in return.

U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, were involved in negotiations with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov regarding Gilman's release. Upon arriving in the United States, Gilman was reportedly scheduled for a medical and psychological evaluation at a Texas military hospital.

However, many political commentators, such as Ivor Bennett and Dmitry Drize, believe that this release could be the opening of further negotiations between Russia and the United States on matters related to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
