‘Evasive, misleading’: Parliamentary panel on Justice Varma’s testimony

The Lok Sabha Speaker-appointed inquiry committee has recommended further action against Justice Yashwant Varma following his evasive and misleading testimony before the committee. The committee indicted him for the recovery of wads of 500-rupee notes at his official residence in Delhi, the unexplained disappearance of the money, and his failure to provide a satisfactory explanation for his presence and ownership of the cash.

The committee found that Justice Varma's testimony was evasive, incomplete, and misleading, as it did not address the key aspects of the case and offered alternative hypotheses that were not substantiated. Despite his resignation from the Allahabad High Court, sources suggest that Parliament may still initiate removal proceedings against the judge. A CBI inquiry is also being discussed as a possible course of action.
