Duduzane Zuma groomed as MK’s heir apparent

Duduzane Zuma, the son of former South African president Jacob Zuma, is being groomed to become the next leader of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, according to analysts. His recent appointment as the first deputy president of MK, replacing John Hlophe, has sparked discussions about the potential emergence of South Africa's first openly declared political dynasty.

Since his appointment, Duduzane has been actively promoting himself through media interviews and social media, presenting a vision of an ideal society and future South Africa. Political analyst Prof Ntsikelelo Breakfast from Nelson Mandela University notes that Jacob Zuma's leadership strategy has always centered around his family, suggesting that both his son and daughter were considered potential successors.

However, Duduzane's rise appears to be more deliberate and calculated, as opposed to his sister Duduzile's previous position, which faltered due to controversial remarks and conflicts with MK leadership. Breakfast expresses doubt about the long-term viability of Duduzane's political future, pointing out that neither sibling has shown a strong political foundation or the ability to articulate coherent political arguments.

Meanwhile, ANC veteran Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma continues to criticize party officials, particularly Fikile Mbalula and Ronald Lamola, accusing them of bribery in ANC elections. Dlamini-Zuma, who failed twice to become ANC president, remains resentful, believing she should have been elected in the past. Her criticism, Breakfast suggests, is part of a broader attempt to tarnish the current ANC leadership ahead of the 2027 election.
