Delimitation: Tamil Nadu Assembly adopts CM Vijay’s resolution to freeze Lok Sabha seats at 543

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly passed a resolution on August 12, 2026, urging the Union government to freeze the number of Lok Sabha seats at the current 543 and maintain the existing inter-State distribution ratio. The resolution also emphasized implementing a 33% reservation for women in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, based on the current seat count and subsequent Assembly elections.

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay emphasized that women's reservation is a matter of social justice and constitutional right, pointing out that women constitute nearly half of India's population and should be given equal status at all levels. Despite the increasing number of women MLAs, there has been no significant improvement in their percentage representation in the Assembly.

The resolution was moved by Vijay, who highlighted that the delay in implementing the 106th Constitutional Amendment Act, providing for one-third reservation of seats for women in Parliament and State Legislative Assemblies, has created a situation where the objective of the legislation could remain unfulfilled for years. The delimitation exercise, which would alter the number of parliamentary representatives from southern States, was also a concern raised by Vijay. The AIADMK, PMK, DMDK, and BJP opposed the resolution, while the DMK supported it.
