Delimitation row: CM Vijay moves resolution to freeze Lok Sabha Seats at 543

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay moved a special resolution in the state Assembly on Wednesday to freeze the number of Lok Sabha seats at 543, urging the Centre to retain the Lok Sabha-Rajya Sabha seat ratio at 2.2:1. The government-backed resolution also demanded immediate implementation of 33% reservation for women in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, based on the current 543 constituencies.

Vijay emphasized that such reservation should not be delayed any further, noting that Tamil Nadu has more women voters than men. The resolution pointed out that the population of states, including Tamil Nadu, and Union Territories had not been counted for more than 50 years, with the next census scheduled for 2026. Consequently, the resolution called for delimitation of constituencies and increasing the number of Lok Sabha and Assembly members from 550 to 850 through a constitutional amendment.
