Colombia sides with Morocco over Western Sahara as it aligns with Israeli foreign policy

Colombia has aligned itself with Morocco's stance on Western Sahara and endorsed Israel's annexation of the Golan Heights, marking a shift in its foreign policy. The new far-right government, led by President Abelardo de la Espriella, made these decisions shortly after taking office, signaling a close relationship with Israel and the United States.

This move comes after the government reversed its policy on Western Sahara, recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed territory. The decision was made in consultation with Moroccan officials, with Foreign Minister Omar Bula Escobar confirming on X that Colombia "recognizes Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara." Furthermore, Colombia withdrew its recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and severed diplomatic ties with the independence movement, reversing a policy enacted by former President Gustavo Petro in 2022.

Colombia has now adopted Morocco's territorial settlement, which is consistent with the deal brokered by US President Donald Trump in 2020. The move marks a significant departure from Petro's foreign policy, which opposed Israel's war on Gaza and severed diplomatic relations with Israel in May 2024. In addition to Western Sahara, Colombia also recognized Israel's annexation of the Syrian Golan Heights, a decision that the United Nations deems null and void.

Despite the earthquake that struck Colombia earlier that day, causing significant loss of life, the foreign ministry found time to declare Israeli control of the Golan Heights essential to Israel's security. This decision places Colombia among a select group of nations, including the United States, that recognize Israel's annexation of the Golan Heights.
