City Power warns of planned power cuts in these areas of Johannesburg this week

City Power, the electricity utility in Johannesburg, has announced a series of planned power cuts this week as part of scheduled maintenance work. The utility aims to strengthen and stabilise the network ahead of the increased winter demand. Isaac Mangena, a spokesperson for City Power, explained that the maintenance targets ageing infrastructure that requires regular servicing.

These planned interruptions are crucial for preventing larger problems down the line by identifying and replacing faulty equipment, thus reducing the risk of unplanned outages. Mangena noted that the timing of the work coincides with the additional strain placed on the grid due to colder weather in winter, which puts extra pressure on electricity infrastructure.

The first outage is scheduled for the Greenstone Hill Switching Station in Midrand on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, between 09am and 5pm. This will affect areas including Stone Close, Hereford Road, Stoneridge Drive, and Emerald Boulevard. A second outage is planned for the Strydom Street Switching Station in Roodepoort on Monday, 18 August 2026, impacting Strydom Street and parts of Witpoortjie.

City Power advises residents to remain vigilant during the outage periods, as power could return unexpectedly. Customers are urged to treat all electrical supply points as live and to disconnect devices when supply resumes to prevent damage. The utility thanked residents for their patience and cooperation during these essential maintenance activities.
