Can Berkshire Hathaway without Warren Buffett remain a ‘north star’ for China’s investors?

For more than half a century, Chinese investors had journeyed to Omaha to witness Warren Buffett's shareholder meetings, treating them as spiritual gatherings rather than mere corporate briefings. With Buffett's retirement as CEO, effective January 1, the question arose whether Berkshire Hathaway could uphold its reputation as a guiding force for Chinese investors.

Market analysts opined that, while Buffett's unique presence might be challenging to replace, the company's investment philosophy remained relevant – yet required adjustments. Yang Delong, chief economist at Qianhai Open Source Fund Management, contended that Buffett's principles were timeless and continued to captivate investors' interest.

Kevin Chen Kaifeng, chief economist at Horizon Financial, added that Buffett remained active in the company, exemplified by his personal initiation of a $10 billion stake in Alphabet. Berkshire's second-quarter results, released recently, revealed a significant surge in net earnings and operating earnings, prompting optimism about the company's strategic shift under new CEO Greg Abel.

The firm's increased equity purchases and stock buybacks signaled a move towards value investing, in contrast to the current market's inclination towards high-growth sectors like artificial intelligence. However, Berkshire's shares only rose by around 3% this year, trailing the broader S&P 500's gains, suggesting a short-term market distraction from value investing.
