Britain's Glave upstages Jacobs to win European 100m gold

Birmingham witnessed Britain's Romell Glave upstage two-time defending champion Marcell Jacobs to claim the European men's 100m gold title on Tuesday. The Tokyo Olympics gold medallist had been favored heading into the race, but a poor start left him trailing, allowing Glave to seize the advantage he never relinquished. Italian runner-up, caught by what he described as a potential serious injury to his adductor, slowed to a jog around the 50m mark of the race.

Glave clocked 10.09 seconds for the victory, with fellow Britain, Jeremiah Azu, taking silver in 10.16 seconds. This is an amazing feeling, Glave remarked, reflecting on the hard work that went into coming to the event and executing his race. He reiterated his aim to secure one, two, and three spots, but the remarkable feat of achieving 1-2 is equally impressive.

Glave, 26, added that Britain's 100m performances, notably following Amy Hunt's win in the women's race, demonstrated a total domination. Germany's Owen Ansah, currently under scrutiny from his country's anti-doping agency for refusing a doping test, secured bronze in 10.19 seconds. Jacobs, 31, concluded the race in seventh place, more than two seconds behind the pace.

He expressed concern over a potential serious injury, stating that he felt something before the start during the blocks, causing a significant pull in his adductor. Despite his disappointment at the final outcome, Jacobs emphasized his commitment to playing the game and understanding the severity of his condition, acknowledging it as an inherent part of sports.
