Boeing and US Air Force sign deal to build guided jet-powered bombs capable of traveling 300 nautical miles

Boeing has secured a $75 million contract from the US Air Force to begin manufacturing a new long-range guided bomb called the GBU-75. The weapon, which extends the range of JDAM warheads to over 300 nautical miles, combines a 500-pound-class JDAM warhead with a compact turbojet engine. This turbojet kit, known as the BSU-111/B Payload Delivery Unit, was designed to significantly boost the JDAM's reach beyond previous variants.

Boeing's investment in the JDAM LR program totaled nearly $100 million before this contract. The first batch of GBU-75 bombs will initially be provided to the Navy, with testing demonstrating the bomb's ability to travel 200 nautical miles in April 2026. Despite this milestone, the contract's final price remains undisclosed, raising concerns about financial risk as contractors are paid based on allowable costs regardless of final terms.
