Apple picks up Nate Gatten as new head of government affairs

Apple has appointed former American Airlines executive Nate Gatten as the new Vice President of Government Affairs, effective August 31. This move comes after the retirement of Lisa Jackson, who had led the company's government affairs and environmental initiatives since joining Apple in 2013. Gatten, a Republican, will report to Jennifer Newstead, Apple's Senior Vice President and General Counsel, and will work closely with CEO Tim Cook.

Gatten's appointment is seen as strategic, as Apple sought someone who could align with the Trump administration. However, the company also aims to maintain relationships with leaders across the political spectrum, seeing Gatten as someone capable of constructive engagement with policymakers from both sides. This will be particularly crucial given the potential shift in power in Washington following the 2022 midterm elections.

Prior to joining American Airlines in 2017, Gatten held leadership positions at JPMorgan Chase and Fannie Mae. His real estate experience could prove valuable as Apple expands its retail operations. Apple's senior leadership, including Cook and Newstead, sees Gatten's appointment as a way to navigate the complex landscape of government relations, especially in light of the upcoming leadership changes within the company.
