Anutin tells politicians not to carry guns, warns of ethics risks

Bangkok, 12 August 2026 - Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has cautioned politicians not to carry firearms, emphasizing the importance of public figures adhering to the law. Speaking to reporters at Sanam Luang, Anutin made this statement during a Bhumjaithai Party MPs' meeting, noting that no one can currently carry a gun as all gun-carrying permits have expired in Thailand.

When questioned about a few party members owning firearms as part of their collections, Anutin clarified that gun ownership was a separate matter, provided it had been declared in their asset accounts. However, he stressed that politicians and individuals seeking elected or political office must be especially cautious. "If firearms are found during a search and they are being possessed illegally, that is a violation of the law. Once the law has been broken, it could also be interpreted as an ethical issue," Anutin warned.

Anutin emphasized that public figures have to set an example. "We are simply following the law," he said. The government has also suspended the issuance of Por.3 documents since 11 August, meaning people can no longer buy firearms until there is an order to change this.

Responding to controversy over his earlier remarks against shooting intruders, Anutin clarified that his main message was to acknowledge the dangers of firearms. He further explained that if someone shoots an intruder, the shooter could still face charges even if the use of force was deemed legitimate self-defence. The court would determine if the use of force was justified before any verdict.

Anutin urged people to consider carefully before being around firearms, stating that guns have never benefited anyone and that their presence is detrimental.
