Airport security plan to be tabled to Cabinet next week

Malaysian Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail announced plans to present an airport security enhancement proposal to the Cabinet next week, following the arrest of a Malaysian pilot suspected of drug smuggling in Indonesia. The plan, which will be discussed by relevant regulatory agencies including the Home and Transport Ministries, Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS), Aviation Security, the Malaysian Aviation Commission, and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia, aims to strengthen security controls at Malaysian airports.

The proposal will cover coordination, training, infrastructure, and logistics, with a specific focus on the operation of scanning machines. Saifuddin emphasized that airport scanning machines, operated by Aviation Security teams, follow International Civil Aviation Organization standards to detect bombs, sharp weapons, and firearms.

However, Saifuddin noted that screening procedures don't fall under routine police or AKPS security checks, and thus require realignment. The matter was previously discussed at a Cabinet meeting last week, where it was decided that all relevant agencies should develop a strengthened security plan. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had brought the issue to the attention of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, who urged all parties to prioritize airport security.

The enhancement plan is not only about security but also about preserving Malaysia's reputation, particularly considering the country's strong tourist arrivals.
