Airport security plan to be tabled to Cabinet next week

The Malaysian Home Minister, Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, announced that a plan to bolster airport security will be submitted to the Cabinet next week. This announcement came after the arrest of a Malaysian pilot in Indonesia on drug smuggling allegations. The plan, which encompasses coordination, training, infrastructure, and logistics, including the operation of scanning machines, was discussed during last week's Cabinet meeting.

Relevant regulatory agencies involved in the planning process include the Home and Transport Ministries, the Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS), Aviation Security, the Malaysian Aviation Commission, and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia. Saifuddin stated that the agencies met recently, and a paper outlining the security enhancement plan will be presented to the Cabinet during the upcoming meeting.

The proposed security plan will focus on coordinating efforts, providing comprehensive training, improving infrastructure, and optimizing logistics, such as the operation of scanning machines. These machines, operated by Aviation Security teams, are designed to detect bombs, sharp weapons, and firearms, adhering to standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Saifuddin noted that while the scanning machines can detect contraband, the screening procedures are not part of routine security checks conducted by the police or AKPS, thus requiring a revision of procedures. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim conveyed the matter to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, who emphasized the importance of prioritizing airport security.

Saifuddin highlighted that airport security is crucial not only for ensuring safety but also for maintaining Malaysia's reputation, especially considering the country's thriving tourism industry.
