Accidental drowning recorded at Donegal kayaker inquest

An inquest into the death of Paul Buchanan, a 57-year-old experienced kayaker, has recorded a verdict of accidental drowning. Buchanan, an accountant from Ramelton, went missing off the Co Donegal coast on 3 October 2024. He had informed his wife, Bernadette, that he was planning to go kayaking after work and would not be making dinner as he would be getting a takeaway.

Despite a massive land and sea search that lasted 21 days, Buchanan's body was never found. His kayak was eventually discovered almost 5km north off Toraigh. The inquest, held at Letterkenny Courthouse, began with an account from Bernadette Buchanan, who described her last sighting of her husband as he left for work on the morning of 3 October.

The search involved a wide range of teams including three helicopter units, a fixed-wing plane, various RNLI crews, and a Pan-Pan alert to all ships in the area. The entire operation was coordinated by the Malin Head Coast Guard station.
