2027: Obi needs wider northern acceptance, not youth endorsement – Analyst

Hassan Ibrahim, a Kano-based political analyst, has argued that the support of northern youth groups alone is not enough to determine Peter Obi's chances of winning the 2027 presidential election. While consultation with youth groups is important, it does not guarantee victory. In the 2023 election, Obi consulted with northern youth groups, but he still lost.

Ibrahim emphasized that northern votes are crucial due to the region's large population, but merely having the backing of one youth organization does not secure the presidency. To improve his support base, Obi should engage with various interest groups, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, farmers, and community leaders.

He should communicate directly with northerners, address their concerns, and use the Hausa language to effectively convey his message. Additionally, Obi must tackle negative perceptions and allegations, such as those claiming he destroyed mosques, sent northerners back to the north, and supports the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

A clear plan for addressing insecurity and supporting farmers could also help Obi gain the confidence of voters in the North.
