2026 total solar eclipse: See photos from the Aug 12 event and where it is visible

A total solar eclipse is underway on Aug. 12, 2026, offering a rare opportunity for millions of skywatchers in a narrow band across Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Portugal and Russia to witness the sun completely obscured by the moon. NASA reports the celestial event will unfold across a path that stretches from Greenland to northern Russia, passing over Iceland and parts of Spain and Portugal.

While a partial solar eclipse will be visible in various locations across the United States, including Alaska to North Carolina, with coverage ranging from 9% in New York City to 28% in Anchorage, Alaska. To safely observe the partial eclipse, spectators are advised to wear certified eclipse glasses or use ISO 12312-2 compliant solar viewers, as regular sunglasses are inadequate for viewing the sun.
