2 workers killed, 3 injured as soil caves in at Bengaluru underpass site

On Tuesday morning, a catastrophic cave-in at an underpass construction site in Bengaluru claimed the lives of two workers and left three others injured. The tragic incident occurred at the BDA Kanteerava Studio underpass, where PJB Engineers Pvt Ltd was conducting work on the turnkey project. According to police, the soil suddenly collapsed while the workers were removing accumulated water, leaving only three of them to escape the danger.

Two victims succumbed to their injuries at the scene - 55-year-old Parimal Basak from West Bengal and 37-year-old Sunaram Tiria from Odisha. The remaining injured workers, 35-year-old Sadanand Kindo from Jharkhand and 29-year-old Sunil Xalxo from Chhattisgarh, were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

In response to the incident, the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has ordered an independent inquiry to determine the exact cause of the soil collapse. The inquiry committee will consist of a retired judge and a retired chief engineer, with a report due within 45 days. The BDA has announced a compensation of Rs 8 lakh per family for the two deceased workers and will cover the medical expenses of the injured workers, providing necessary assistance to them and their families.

The BDA is coordinating with the Labour Department and district administrations to facilitate the repatriation of the victims' bodies to their native places.
