10th House working with executive on pro-people bills, says Agbese

The 10th National Assembly in Nigeria is collaborating with the executive branch to pass legislation that benefits the average Nigerian citizen, according to Philip Agbese, Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives. Agbese highlighted the establishment of state police as a prime example of their joint efforts, noting that the initiative was proposed by the National Assembly before the executive introduced its own bill on the matter.

He emphasized that the House does not simply rubber-stamp executive proposals but actively works ahead of the executive on bills that positively impact the lives of Nigerians. Agbese also acknowledged the positive progress made in the fight against insecurity, citing recent rescue operations against kidnapped victims in various parts of the country.

He praised the Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, and other service chiefs for their more coordinated approach to security operations. Additionally, Agbese addressed concerns raised by a bipartisan group of lawmakers regarding the suspension of the National Assembly's recess. While he acknowledged the validity of their concerns, Agbese questioned the timing of the demand, especially with the 2027 general elections approaching.

He urged lawmakers not to allow the parliament to become a platform for advancing political interests outside the legislature, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a productive relationship between the executive and the legislature.
