10th House working with executive on pro-people bills, says Agbese

The 10th National Assembly is collaborating with the executive to push through pro-people legislation, according to the Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese. He highlighted the establishment of state police as an example of an initiative originating from the parliament, which has been under consideration for some time.

Agbese emphasized that the executive's introduction of its own bill on state police should not be seen as a sign of a rubber-stamp parliament, but rather an opportunity for both branches of government to align their positions and create a comprehensive proposal before sending it to the state Houses of Assembly. He stated, "We have been on the state police bills for a while now, and the executive's move to introduce an executive bill is to ensure that we have a refined document at the center before transmitting the same proposal to the state Houses of Assembly."

Agbese also praised the efforts of security chiefs and the Chief of Defence Staff in improving security operations, commended the government's efforts to enhance the welfare of military personnel, and addressed a bipartisan group's concerns about the National Assembly's recess. He questioned the timing of the demand for a recess, especially with the 2027 general elections approaching, and cautioned against using the parliament for political expediency.
