Zwakele Mncwango Unveils ActionSA's Vision for eThekwini

Zwakele Mncwango, leader of the ActionSA party in KwaZulu-Natal, has unveiled his 10-point plan to transform eThekwini Municipality if elected as the mayoral candidate. Mncwango addressed the party's prospects in the upcoming local government elections on November 4, emphasizing that his top priority is improving the city's performance across various domains, such as service delivery, infrastructure, law and order, and public transport.

Mncwango highlighted that eThekwini, a city rich in potential, grapples with significant challenges, including residents facing dry taps, crumbling roads, unemployment, crime, and a government that appears detached from its constituents. His plan consists of five non-negotiable conditions for any coalition government, placing residents' needs before political considerations.

Among his priorities, Mncwango stresses the urgent need to restore basic service delivery and rebuild infrastructure. This entails tackling water leaks, burst pipes, aging infrastructure, sewage spills, and inequitable service delivery plaguing residents. To address the 58% water loss, ActionSA advocates for insourcing essential municipal services, as the current reliance on contractors exacerbates service delivery decline and worker exploitation.

Another crucial priority for Mncwango is restoring law and order. Illegal immigration, drug trafficking, illegal businesses, hijacked buildings, and cable theft pose significant threats to communities. He plans to establish a specialized Metro Police Unit dedicated to addressing these issues.

Despite Mncwango's strong personal qualifications as a principled individual and a party member committed to good governance, some concerns remain. Political analyst Professor Musa Xulu acknowledges Mncwango's potential to make a good mayor due to his integrity and the party's belief in effective governance. However, the association with the March and March campaign, which primarily drew support from hostel communities predominantly male and affiliated with the IFP, may hinder his voter appeal.

The March and March movement's momentum is waning, and new organizations are emerging to oppose it. Mncwango's chances of becoming mayor or deputy mayor could be bolstered by forming a coalition. Nevertheless, if elected, he is poised to make a positive impact on eThekwini's future.
