Wrexham sign goalkeeper Patterson from Sunderland for reported record fee

Wrexham has signed Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson in a club-record £8 million deal, according to reports. The Championship side and their Hollywood owners are aiming to secure promotion to the Premier League this season. Patterson, 26, is the club's third signing this summer and has committed to a four-year contract that extends until the end of the 2029-30 campaign.

The goalkeeper, who joined Sunderland's academy at the age of 10, has made 169 competitive appearances for Sunderland and played a crucial role in their promotions to the Championship and Premier League. Patterson also had a loan spell at Millwall last season, featuring in 16 matches. Patterson expressed his excitement about playing for Wrexham, stating that everything is in place for the club to achieve promotion.

The previous record transfer fee for the club was £7.5 million, paid for striker Nathan Broadhead last year. Wrexham finished seventh in the Championship last season, just two points shy of securing a playoff spot in the Premier League. The team's Hollywood owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, acquired the Welsh club in 2021.
