Woman, 78, believed killed in crocodile attack while collecting river snails in Batu Niah

KUCHING, Aug 11 — A 78-year-old woman, Sambai Anggah, tragically lost her life in a crocodile attack while collecting river snails near Jambatan Suai in Batu Niah, Miri on Tuesday. The incident occurred when Sambai and her 31-year-old daughter were out searching for snails close to a tributary of Sungai Suai. Her daughter witnessed the crocodile snatch her mother from the boat, dragging her approximately 10 metres away before releasing her after villagers surrounded the animal.

Bomba received the emergency call at 11:26 am and dispatched five personnel from the Batu Niah fire station to the scene, which was located at a junction before Suai Bridge. The team arrived at 11:58 am and conducted monitoring at the scene, declaring it safe and under control. The victim's body was eventually recovered and handed over to the police for further actions, and the operation concluded at 1:45 pm.
