What to do if ICE agents show up at your door

ICE agents have been conducting a surge in arrests of immigrants under the Trump administration's stricter immigration policies. The Texas Civil Rights Project's Charlotte Weiss advises against opening the door to ICE agents or officers who may accompany them. To verify legitimacy, ask for a judicial warrant signed by a judge, and inspect its contents.

Refuse consent to enter your home even if officers force entry. Remain silent when questioned, as any statements may be used against you. Avoid confrontations and lying about personal information, as these could result in criminal charges. If you suspect rights violations, document the encounter including badge numbers, agency affiliations, and witness contact information. In case of detention, filing a habeas petition in federal court is the quickest route to release.
