VinSpace signs deal with SpaceX to launch its first satellites

Vietnamese aerospace firm VinSpace has secured a contract with SpaceX to send its inaugural satellites into orbit using a SpaceX Transporter rideshare mission slated for 2027. This move comes as Vietnam strives to build its fledgling space industry. The satellites, which VinSpace will design, manufacture, and operate, will be utilized to evaluate the company's technology in orbit and facilitate future commercial uses.

VinSpace, a subsidiary of the Vingroup conglomerate, was established in November 2025. The company had previously announced plans to develop and launch its first satellites in 2027. Founded by billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong, Vingroup is Vietnam's largest privately held enterprise, with operations spanning real estate, retail, healthcare, education, and tourism, among other sectors.

Vietnam has been endeavoring to bolster its aerospace capabilities for several decades, but remains a minor player in the global space sector. The nation launched its first telecommunications satellite in 2008 and another in 2012. In March, Vietnam inaugurated a prominent space science and technology center in Hanoi's Hoa Lac High-Tech Park, aimed at advancing satellite development and leveraging space-based data.

Vietnam aims to become a mid-tier space power in Southeast Asia by 2030. In February, Vietnam permitted SpaceX to launch Starlink satellite internet service in the country, potentially to circumvent US tariffs, which has since begun accepting orders. VinSpace stated that the agreement with SpaceX is part of its strategy to become a comprehensive aerospace entity, encompassing capabilities from satellite design and manufacturing to launch management, satellite operations, and space-based data services.

VinSpace CEO Thu Vu emphasized the importance of reliable access to space in transforming satellite innovation into functional missions. The details of the contract, including the number and specifications of the satellites, were not disclosed.
