Venezuela’s twin quake death toll rises to 6,301

Venezuela's death toll from twin earthquakes in June has reached 6,301, according to a government report released on Monday. The revised figure, announced by the National Assembly chief Jorge Rodriguez, surpasses the previous toll of 6,125 recorded on August 3. The central government has not disclosed the exact number of people still missing following the 7.2 and 7.5-magnitude tremors that left around 190 buildings in ruins.

Governor of the most affected state, La Guaira, Jose Alejandro Teran, reported last week that approximately 1,400 individuals remain unaccounted for. Around 24,000 people have been left homeless, many of whom are residing in temporary shelters. On Monday, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck neighboring Colombia, causing at least 111 deaths and 87 injuries, as reported by president Abelardo de la Espriella.

The recurrence of such natural disasters has reignited painful memories for many Venezuelans dealing with their own challenges.
