Venezuela’s twin quake death toll rises to 6,301

Venezuela's death toll from the twin earthquakes in June has risen to 6,301, according to the latest government report released on Monday. National Assembly chief Jorge Rodriguez announced the revised number, which is an increase from the previous toll of 6,125 reported on August 3. The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitudes, destroyed approximately 190 buildings across the country.

The central government has not disclosed the exact number of people still missing following the catastrophic events. However, Jose Alejandro Teran, the governor of the worst-hit state of La Guaira located north of Caracas, stated last week that around 1,400 individuals remain unaccounted for. Additionally, about 24,000 people were left homeless, many of whom are currently residing in makeshift camps.

On Monday, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck neighboring Colombia, causing at least 111 deaths and 87 injuries, according to the latest toll provided by Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella. The tremor served as a painful reminder of the challenges faced by Venezuelan residents who are still grappling with the aftermath of their own earthquakes.
