Veep meets Kayayei Association, calls for holistic support

On Monday, Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang welcomed a delegation from the Kayayei Association, headed by Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, to address the issues faced by porters. This discussion followed previous conversations that brought to light key concerns such as exploitation, limited opportunities for skill development, and challenges in establishing sustainable businesses for women porters.

Addressing the root causes of migration, the Vice President stressed that the kayayei situation cannot be viewed in isolation; it must be considered within the broader context of migration, inequality, and development. "Both the push and pull factors drive people to leave their communities," Prof. Opoku-Agyemang pointed out. She highlighted that while skill development is crucial, it must be practical and related to real benefits, with training tailored to the aspirations of the women.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang underscored the importance of safeguarding children in kayayei communities, making their welfare a central focus of any long-term approach. The Vice President also called for stricter measures to shield women from exploitation in both marketplaces and workplaces. She praised the Ministry and the Kayayei Association for their ongoing efforts, reiterating the government's commitment to a more comprehensive response that creates opportunities, enhances protection, and enables individuals to fully realize their potential.

Minister Lartey pledged the Ministry's collaboration with the Association to devise interventions grounded in the lived experiences of porters, aiming for tangible results.
