UWC's Innovative Approach to Combat Youth Unemployment in South Africa

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) remains committed to addressing youth unemployment, despite the end of Youth Month. Their Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) has led seven out of 14 training sessions at the UWC Innovation Hub, reaching 50 unemployed young people in the past two months. CEI Director Abe Oliver highlighted that the participant base has grown beyond UWC alumni, including students from Stellenbosch University, University of the Free State, and Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

The Youth Unemployment Entrepreneurial Training Programme (YUETP) is designed to cater to a diverse range of educational backgrounds, from matriculants to graduates. Funded by the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSETA), the programme blends training, business ideation, and seed capital to tackle unemployment. Oliver emphasized that the programme not only provides training but also inspires hope by offering participants pathways to further education, employability, or entrepreneurship.

By integrating networking opportunities and ecosystem support, the YUETP fosters social capital, enabling participants to build businesses that can thrive beyond the training period. The initiative has seen participants take bold steps to shape their futures, with some running registered businesses while employed. The success of the programme is also evident as five participants secured jobs, and two advanced to the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) for grant funding.

Oliver acknowledges that continued mentorship, networking, and enterprise support are crucial to ensuring that all young people have the tools to succeed.
