Ukrainian drone strike kills 13 inside Russia, authorities say, in deadliest attack in two years

A Ukrainian drone strike has claimed the lives of at least 13 individuals and injured 75 others in Nizhnekamsk, a city situated deep within Russia's Tatarstan region. This marks the deadliest attack to occur in the country in over two years. Nizhnekamsk, located more than 600 miles east of Moscow, is home to the Taneco oil refinery, which Ukraine's forces claim was the target of the attack.

Videos posted on social media, corroborated by geolocation data from CNN, depict an extensive fire and towering smoke plumes emanating from a location near what appear to be the distinct towers of an oil refinery. However, it remains unclear precisely what was targeted during the assault. The escalation of aerial attacks from both Russia and Ukraine has led to increased civilian casualties and damage to critical infrastructure.

July proved to be the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians since April 2022, resulting in 1,396 deaths and 7,978 injuries during the first six months of the year, according to the UN. A child was among those who perished in Nizhnekamsk, while 21 individuals were hospitalized, as per the Russian Investigative Committee and the region's press service.

Additional fatalities occurred in the Russian region of Belgorod, which borders Ukraine, where four people lost their lives in the past 24 hours, according to Alexandr Shuvayev, the acting governor of the region. Ukraine's advancement in long-range drone technology has enabled the nation to strike infrastructure located deep within Russia, including oil refineries, tankers, power substations, and even the warehouses of the country's largest online retailer, Wildberries.

Notably, a Ukrainian drone attack on Wildberries' warehouses last month resulted in at least eight deaths, surpassing Monday's strike in Nizhnekamsk as the deadliest Ukrainian attack inside Russia to date. Russia's aerial assaults on Ukraine continue to far exceed Kyiv's retaliatory strikes. In a single night earlier this month, Russian missiles killed at least 17 people and wounded dozens more in the Kyiv region.

These attacks are further exacerbated by Ukraine's limited supply of ballistic-missile interceptors, as it urgently seeks assistance from allies to replenish its stockpile of US-made Patriot interceptor missiles.
