Ukraine’s Defense Minister Discusses Freyja Program and Cooperation with Sweden and Norway

Ukraine's Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara convened with Swedish and Norwegian Defense Ministers Pål Jonson and Tore Sandvik on August 10, discussing critical military requirements and the development of a European anti-ballistic defense project, Freyja, according to UATV English. Khmara provided an update following a site visit to Ukrainian front-line units and informed his counterparts of the frontline troops' identified needs.

The Ukrainian military is seeking prompt support for drone financing, including both reconnaissance and middle-strike capabilities, as well as countermeasures against ballistic and cruise missiles and jet-powered Shahed drones. The defense minister emphasized the urgent need for interceptor missiles and means for asymmetric action.

The ministers further discussed long-term defense initiatives, including the advancement of Freyja, a European system designed to combat Russia's missile threat. The talks also touched upon specific areas of bilateral defense collaboration between Ukraine and each of the Nordic nations. The discussions occur at a time when Ukraine is actively seeking enhanced air defense capabilities and interceptor missiles from its partners while simultaneously advancing joint European defense projects.

Earlier this week, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy engaged with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre to discuss Ukraine's defenses against Russian attacks and further air defense assistance.
