Trump Finally Backs Infantino Amid FIFA Leadership Crisis

President Donald Trump, in a recent statement on his Truth Social platform, defended FIFA president Gianni Infantino amid mounting opposition to his leadership. This comes after Infantino's failed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup, which was called off on July 31. The presidents of Europe, North America, and Asia's soccer bodies, who are also FIFA vice presidents, had already published a joint letter accusing Infantino of "deception" and FIFA of "fearmongering" in their communications with member associations.

Trump's support for Infantino is significant, as he has been unopposed in the upcoming FIFA presidential election in March. However, several countries, including Finland, Wales, Serbia, and England, have already pulled their endorsements of Infantino for the election. The Swiss official's FIFA tenure is currently running unopposed. Europe's UEFA had threatened a boycott of all FIFA tournaments during the FFE saga, stating that its conditions have not been met to ensure such attempts to tarnish the game are not repeated.

In a letter released on Monday, the European, North American, and Asian soccer bodies reiterated their stance, stating that there is no recognition that attempting to sell an interest in the FIFA World Cup was a grave failure of judgment. U.S. Soccer, along with all CONCACAF soccer bodies aside from Mexico, has joined the call for meaningful change to strengthen FIFA's governance, transparency, and accountability.
