Transfer: Michael Owen names player blocking Haaland from joining Real Madrid

Former Real Madrid player Michael Owen has revealed that Kylian Mbappe's presence must end if the Spanish club are to sign Erling Haaland. The Manchester City forward, frequently linked with a move to Real Madrid, spoke about the situation with Goal.com. Owen emphasized that both players occupy the same position, making it impossible for them to play together.

He added that spending large amounts on star players does not guarantee success, citing past examples. Owen also mentioned doubts about Vinicius Junior and Mbappe working together, as Mbappe typically prefers the left wing. He firmly believes that it is either Mbappe or Haaland who will be in the Real Madrid squad, not both. Owen suggests that the financial implications and difficulty in making it work would likely require Mbappe's departure for Haaland to join.

He acknowledged that Real Madrid has tried the "Galactico" approach in the past, but simply assembling top players is not always the answer. Haaland had been linked with a move to Real Madrid during his time at Borussia Dortmund but instead signed for Manchester City in 2022. Speculation about a potential transfer to the Bernabeu has persisted since he signed a long-term contract with City in 2024.

Mbappe, meanwhile, has scored 86 goals in 103 appearances for Real Madrid since his summer 2024 arrival as a free agent, yet has yet to win any major trophies with the club. Real Madrid have invested heavily in other talents this summer, including £140 million on Jude Bellingham, and are unlikely to sign another attacking player like Haaland.
