Tony Romo’s CBS future remains uncertain as network says it’s still ‘assessing’ his fate

CBS remains uncertain about the future of Tony Romo, as the network continues to assess his situation. David Berson, CBS Sports president, stated at the NFL on CBS media day in New York that a decision has not been made regarding Romo's role with the company. Romo, who was arrested on July 23 in Wisconsin for operating under the influence, was placed on indefinite leave by CBS a week later, with JJ Watt taking his place on the network's top broadcast crew alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson.

Both Nantz and Wolfson have been in touch with Romo privately, but they have not speculated about his potential return to the broadcast booth. Romo, 46, is currently in the seventh year of a reported 10-year, $180 million contract with CBS and has called three Super Bowls for the network. Berson cited the impact on CBS' image and brand as the reason for placing Romo on leave, emphasizing that the focus should be on the presentation of the product and not on any other factors.

Nantz expressed his excitement about working with JJ Watt, who he described as having an incredible personality and ease with which he approaches people. Watt is expected to join Ian Eagle and Evan Washburn on CBS' No. 2 broadcast crew in Romo's absence. The network's season will begin with Watt joining Nantz, Wolfson, and Romo on the broadcast crew for two Cowboys games, including a Week 3 game in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, and a Week 15 game in Los Angeles against the Rams.
