Three youngsters in court for Paarl LGBTQ+ teen’s brutal murder

The LGBTQ+ community in Paarl is devastated following the brutal murder of 17-year-old Justine Davids, a learner at L.K. Zeeman Academy and a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community. Justine, also known as Justine Jameelia Evangelista, was attacked in an open field in Paulus Street, Lantana, Paarl East, early on Sunday morning, 9 August 2026.

She was the sole victim of the attack, which left her fatally injured. A 17-year-old, an 18-year-old, and a 20-year-old have been arrested in connection with the murder and appeared in the Paarl Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 11 August 2026. The circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation. This tragic event has sparked widespread grief and outrage within the community, with residents demanding justice and stronger measures to protect LGBTQ+ individuals in Paarl and surrounding areas.

A petition was launched calling on the court to consider the severity of the charges, community safety, and the safety of LGBTQ+ and queer people. Justine’s school expressed its sorrow, describing her as someone whose warmth, spirit, and strength would be deeply missed. The incident has also prompted a statement from popular content creator and LGBTQ+ advocate Lito Darling, who questioned why more violence must be endured before LGBTQ+ people are treated with dignity. Darling emphasized that LGBTQI+ lives matter, calling for understanding and respect.
