For legal professionals who work tirelessly in the courtroom, the legal vacation is not a luxury, but a necessity. After a demanding ten-month term, where practitioners pour their all into complex cases from October onwards, the expectation of a break is both reasonable and crucial. To be forced to attend court during this period not only disrupts carefully planned events such as bar conferences and professional development, but also the essential need for a psychological reset.

While non-practitioners might view the annual recess as unnecessary, those on the frontlines understand that a weary bar and bench cannot effectively uphold justice. The longstanding tradition and legal framework that sets aside this period, ensuring statutory procedural time does not run, were designed to protect the health and integrity of the entire legal system.

Though vacation courts are still required for genuine emergencies, and virtual hearings have expanded access for urgent cases, the core principle of respecting the recess must be maintained. Like the process for vacation court judges, firms can accommodate Counsel to attend sessions and enjoy a full break later. However, Counsel who are directly involved in case conduct may not be expected to delegate.
