The Latest: Primary elections in Wisconsin and Minnesota test the Democratic Party’s direction

Primary elections are being held in six U.S. states on Tuesday: Alabama, Connecticut, Minnesota, South Carolina, Vermont and Wisconsin. In Minnesota, progressive Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan emerged victorious in the U.S. Senate primary over centrist U.S. Representative Angie Craig. In Wisconsin, state House Speaker Lisa Demuth won the GOP primary for governor, while Democratic socialist Francesca Hong and establishment candidate David Crowley are in a tight race for the Democratic nomination.

The winner of the Wisconsin gubernatorial primary will face Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany in November. In South Carolina, Democratic Socialists Francesca Hong and establishment candidate David Crowley are in an extraordinarily close race for the Democratic nomination in the special Republican U.S. Senate primary following the death of Lindsey Graham. The winner of the Aug. 25 runoff will claim the U.S. Senate seat.
